PROCRASTINATION: THE BLESSING BLOCKER

April 19, 2016

I come to My Church today to preach as a living testimony that accepting Christ will take your mess and make a message. I am an answered prayer. I am proof that prayer works. As I battle visions of my past I break out in praise. I PRAISE GOD! HALLELUJAH!!! Every chance I git I will share with you my struggles from dope boy to church boy and what I struggle with now, whether it be in conversation, a text, a phone call, a song, or a sermon.

I believe whole heartedly in the power of Christ to raise the dead from the dead. Those that are physically dead, mentally dead, emotionally dead, socially dead, and spiritually dead. I once was dead all but physically dead. My body was on the verge of death cause I was committing slow suicide. I stand here experienced in being a mess and not passing the test life places before us. I stand here before as in Isaiah 50:4

King James Version (KJV)

Isaiah 50:4  The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

Many times I heard the message of Christ and His power but procrastination held me from becoming the man I am today. To think I could have been this man before now but kept making excuses. I still have excuses to procrastinate. Excuses I think are legit. Today I look at an excuse as another form of procrastination.

PROCRASTINATION: THE BLESSING BLOCKER

Can I be honest with y’all today (pause) I tried to blame me being a father as to why my sermon wasn’t wrote yet. Lol!

But it’s not funny cause after the morning sermon and this woman with the issue of blood I realized I have an issue that the Bible says is hindering me having Kingdom keys to promises that are rightfully mine.

There are 73 Bible verses about procrastination. I’m not going to share them all with you due to time but I advise that we as a congregation, as the body of Christ take heed to what the Bible says about procrastination. Don’t take my word for it, look it up yourself.

Proverbs 13:4 (KJV)

4 The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

Proverbs 13:4 Contemporary English Version (CEV)

4 No matter how much you want,
    laziness won’t help a bit,
but hard work will reward you
    with more than enough.

Proverbs 20:4 King James Version (KJV)

4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Proverbs 20:4 Contemporary English Version (CEV)

4 If you are too lazy to plow,
    don’t expect a harvest.

I remember being in jail one of my many stays, and being in a volunteer church service. Might I add that I went just to get out the pod. But the guy bringing the message was tatted up and procrastination reared its ugly head. I, me a sinner said to God please keep me safe as I return to sinning after I’m released from here and after I am tatted up like this guy I will return to jail and do what he is doing now.

Unaware that day I had made a vow to God.

Deuteronomy 23:21-23 King James Version (KJV)

21 When thou shalt vow a vow unto the Lord thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it: for the Lord thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee.

22 But if thou shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee.

23 That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform; even a freewill offering, according as thou hast vowed unto the Lord thy God, which thou hast promised with thy mouth.

Deuteronomy 23:21-23 Contemporary English Version (CEV)

Sacred Promises to the Lord

Moses said:

21 People of Israel, if you make a sacred promise to give a gift to the Lord, then do it as soon as you can. If the Lord has to come looking for the gift you promised, you will be guilty of breaking that promise. 22 On the other hand, if you never make a sacred promise, you can’t be guilty of breaking it.23 You must keep whatever promises you make to the Lord. After all, you are the one who chose to make the promises.

As I look at the power of procrastination I think about the parable of the ten bridesmaids. Matthew 25:1-13. This is me when it comes to opportunities to preach that got passed to the next person in line because I have used excuses as to why I am not ordained yet. I have been held accountable, I have been told what I should be doing to get this done, I have been shown by example the devotion a man of God should have to studying the Word of God but still I struggle and want to sleep just a little longer like the bridesmaids.

Matthew 25:1-13King James Version (KJV)

25 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.5

6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

My preaching focus is on verse  5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

Last night as I began again to prepare the sermon I thought God wanted me to preach I prepared everything and instead I got up and laid on the couch saying I will only rest my eyes a bit. I have another confession about my sleeping habits. To get up for work I set my alarm for 6:30, 6:45, and 7. I also must say that I have been awakened sometimes at 4, 5 or 6am and pray.

After I pray I think about studying or getting ready for work but instead I use the excuse I might wake someone up and I go back to sleep. (sometimes I go to sleep praying)

Proverbs 24:33-34

33 Sleep a little. Doze a little.
    Fold your hands
    and twiddle your thumbs.
34 Suddenly poverty hits you
    and everything is gone!

I have a text illustration to share by John Williams III
There is a classic story about procrastination and it goes like this. An American eagle was flying high over the Niagara River on a cold and wintry day. He saw a dead bullock (young bull) floating down river. He thought to himself, "What a great feast!" He landed and sank his talons deep into the carcass and began to feed on it. He thoroughly enjoyed the feast and was unwilling to let it go. He thought that he had plenty of time to withdraw. He continued to eat. He decided that he would let go at the last minute. Not long after that he was approaching the falls. He tried to fly away. However, he was in for a rude awakening when he found that his feet were frozen to the carcass. In the end, he fell with the carcass.

In Closing as the praise team comes up.

Hebrews 12:11Contemporary English Version (CEV)

11 It is never fun to be corrected. In fact, at the time it is always painful. But if we learn to obey by being corrected, we will do right and live at peace.
